A Fund to Purchase Books
"The Hodge" is a public endowment fund whose income is dedicated to supplementing the Library's budget for books and other printed materials.
Income from the fund is used to make substantive additions to the Library's collection, such as the thirty-four volume Grove Dictionary of Art, that the Library could not otherwise afford.
Founded by an Educator
The Hodge Foundation was created in 1966 by Marian Hodge in honor of her late husband, Vernon. Both Marian and Vernon Hodge were educators. Marian earned a Master's in School Administration and Guidance at Stanford and did additional graduate work at the University of Chicago. In 1941 she was appointed superintendent of the Whittier Union High School District, the first woman to head a school district in California.
Mrs. Hodge, who passed away in 1996, bequeathed an additional sum of over $200,000, more than doubling the endowment of the Foundation.
Anyone May Contribute
A memorial donation to "The Hodge" has become a popular way to pay lasting tribute to a loved one. Donations are added to the endowment, where they generate income for new books.
If the donation is $50 or more, the Library may buy a book right away in a field of the donor's choosing. The book is added to the collection with a bookplate bearing the name of the person being honored.
